This is the earliest minute book in the Sandys Row Synagogue collection. The synagogue was consecrated in 1870, although the Society for Loving Kindness (which later became the Sandys Row community) was established in 1854. The majority of this minute book is written in Dutch, the majority of board members during the 1870s Dutch speakers. The first minutes written in English are dated Saturday 6thSeptember 1873. This meeting starts with a Mr Magnus defending himself after being seen stepping off a train before Shabbat ended in Brighton. The rest of the minute book is written in Dutch and appears to cover general synagogue business. We are awaiting a translation of this document.
