SRS 8: Account & Subscription Book 1876 – 1886
A large ledger containing handwritten entries from 1876 until 1886. The ledger starts with an index of names. The body of the ledger is composed of numbered pages. Pages 1 – 527 are titles with the name of the member and a dated account of his payments to the synagogue.
Pages 528-574 are blank.
The A-Z index at the beginning of the ledger contains names listed by surname, some struck out. Each name has the account page number noted next to it. In the main ledger, a page is given for each member. Entries are not alphabetical. The earliest payments recorded date from September 1876. The last entries date from September 1886. Dates have month and date recorded. Some entries are dated by Jewish year. Some entries have annotations in Hebrew. Some accounts begin with a balance carried over from a preceding ledger. Amounts paid vary. Some accounts are marked ‘erased’, ‘withdrawn’, ‘demised’ or ‘expelled’. The first ten entries are, in order: L M Staal, H Theeman, Ansell Peper, J Berlyn, J H Polak, Jacob van der Moolen, H van Gelder, M Tafelkuyer, H Smalkalden and J Waterman. Inserted between pp 405 and 406 is an undated ?receipt for offerings to Sandys Row Synagogue, made out to J Fontyn [sic]. The offerings record for Jacob Fontyne is on page 405. Inserted between pp 523 and 524 is a blank notice for offerings; on the reverse are handwritten calculations.
