SRS 63: Minute Book 1949 – 1963
This minute book of 65 pages covers the period from 1949-1963. The minutes have been typed on a typewriter and stuck into the ledger. The first Extraordinary General Meeting was held on Sunday May 29th1949 and covers negotiations with the United Synagogue regarding Burials, matters could not be agreed with the board ‘it must be the duty of the Hon-Officers to safeguard the continuation of Sandys Row after 96 years.’ Following meetings throughout 1949 and 1950 predominately focus on these negotiations with the United Synagogue alongside other synagogue business including: supervision of Hebrew Classes, correspondence, officials and their duties, cleaning of the synagogue, annual meetings of the Burial Society, accounts, nominations and elections of committee members, the presidents report etc. From 1953 to 1954 the meetings focused on the centenary celebrations, a special sub-committee was formed to organise events, which included a special service, the publication of a brochure, the hiring of an orchestra and a dinner. By 1955 the minutes focus on the ‘poor state of the building’ arising from a leaking roof. Other minutes of note refer to the letting of the basement. Later minutes are briefer than earlier entries. Inside the book are a number of loose pages including: invitation to Annual General Meeting 1961, letter regarding endowment of seat scheme, invitation to attend Special General Meeting 1936, various letters and signed minutes of a meeting held on 4thJuly 1963.
