SRS 23: Marriage Register 1923 – 1928
This marriage register covers a five-year period which saw tailoring completely overtake cigar and cigarette making and hawking as the primary occupations of the young men and women of the Sandy’s Row congregation. Other notable occupations of those marrying during this time period include (men): billiard marker, scene shifter, market porter, taxi driver, bus conductor, hardware dealer, hotel chef, wheelright and commercial traveller (women): shorthand typist, milliner, hairdresser, furrier, clerk and cardboard box maker. As in previous registers the majority of those getting married at Sandys Row lived in the East London areas of Spitalfields, Shoreditch, Whitechapel, Hackney, Bow and Bethnal Green but in this register there is a shift out to areas further afield including Dalston, Ilford, Stamford Hill, Kings Cross and even Hammersmith.
